Class Notes 1/31/17

Here are the notes from last Tuesday's presentation on craftivism with Felice. Thank you to Marissa for providing them!

Craftivism Notes, 1/31/17

  • Sampler- lots of materials put together; a mix
  • Associate certain materials to grandmother, many believe crafting is silly, not serious
  • Crafting doesn't have to be silly- you can create something with the intent to make something bigger
  • Injustice is ugly and sad, but it can be transformed into art
  • Youth (or other audience,) empowerment, craftivism
  • Betsy Greer, Craftivism: The Art of Craft and Activities
  • Sarah Corbett, A Little Book of Craftivism
  • AIDS blanket, signs for marches, crocheted uteruses
  • How do adults reach out to kids? How can that be successful?
  • Increased number of developmental assets met leads to an increased success in adulthood
  • A lack of developmental assets may cause children to lose perspective of the value of their own lives
  • Craftifesto- power in your hands—powerful, personal, political, possible
  • Donate in a meaningful way, not a wasteful way
  • A thing isn't just a thing, it's what happened to it before it landed in your hand
