Art for an Unexpected Place

Not too long ago, our class took an evening road-trip to Louisville to meet with Mary Carother's Collaborative Projects class. We were able to share ideas and stories about our respective classes and to learn about the projects Mary and her students have been undertaking this year. After some interesting and engaging dialogue, we left the UofL students with a responsibility to write This I Believe essays. They in turn, gave us their "Art for an Unexpected Place" assignment: to put art in a location where it isn't typically found. The pictures here show the ways in which we each decided to complete this assignment.

April took to the pavement with sidewalk chalk, leaving motivational quotes. Here is one she wrote at Duncan Park.

These eyes were drawn out by Blair and then (temporarily) taped to a building downtown. She made two of these sets of eyes, which undoubtedly left people wondering what they were for.

Clay took a different approach, leaving this small image in a "change" slot of a vending machine.

Much to the excitement of students and staff, Kurt and Kremena hung a swing made of street signs from a tree on campus.

Although there was a bit of snow on the ground, Katie left these flowers near a local garden to remind everyone that spring is on its way.

Anyone who has ever seen Sesame Street should surely recognize Cody's contribution to a Rosenthal trash can.
