Class Retreat - March 5th, 2011
On a rainy Saturday evening in March, Community Engagements met at Elmendorf Farm for dinner and writing. Joined by Dr. Richard Taylor and Katerina Stoykova-Klemer, the class was graciously hosted by Nana Lampton, who owns the beautiful farm. The night led off with readings by the visiting poets and selected “This I Believe” essays by the class members. The conversational tone of the night carried into dinner where students, professors, and members of the community discussed everything from the direction of the class itself to the students' plans for after college. The night provided a relaxed atmosphere for connection between Community Engagements and the local writing community. Dinner was followed with the opportunity for writing on the spot, as everyone was asked to write about a moment of realization or epiphany in their lives. The open-ended nature of the prompt allowed those present the freedom to express very different things through the same writing activity. The voices and direction of these writing exercises were varied and presented an interesting collection of perspectives on ostensibly the same topic. The realizations were read aloud, and the night ended with an adventure, as good nights of creativity should. Community Engagements would like to thank everyone who was in attendance for their company and for their dedication to furthering creative writing and inspiration.
