Community? Engagements? Arts? Well, for starters this is a class taught at Transylvania University in Lexington, KY by professors Kremena Todorova and Kurt Gohde. The goal of this class is to form a relationship with the community by engaging in artistic projects with the community. The outcome of this will manifest itself in many ways, some recognizable and others not so much.

Poverty and inequality in the U.S.

budget constraint- solve through work, when work is scarce or skills don’t lineup with jobs available people turn towards the government for assistance

economists support investing in people not places. policy makers love to invest in places. economic justifications… externality negative (natural disaster) or positive
New orleans- don't give money to rebuild the city and instead pay people to leave

The money should be inserted in the area that has the most development potential. Rural communities which were supposed to be the focus got screwed
TIF- tax increment financing —local gov. will use the projected property value in order to encourage investment
some are rejected not all approve the state does that
Opportunity Zones- gonna be designed to stimulate private sector investment in areas by making breaks cosponsored by Corey Booker (past Mayor of New York)
thinking: these are going to go to the communities that are struggling
however, not really the case s. Upset about rent. Rent controlled city. Landlords do shady stuff. Make it unaffordable for people to live there
Imminent Domain- government will take your property. just compensation for that property but that is not always the case.
