Kid's Cafe - Creation of the "Medallions"

Saturday, February 1st:

Saturday afternoon was full of favorite things and stickers.

Everything from purses with caucophonies of colors to shooting stars became the featured centers of CD sized disks of paper, and cards were written, in which it was stated that little brothers should probably share more, but parents were well loved. The children at Kids Cafe were more than happy help us create the images for our mural, and many of them would have probably gladly contributed several favorite things in the world to our efforts.

Some of them found a favorite student from the college and high school volunteers and created drawings of their own, paper snowflakes, cards with cafeully aligned color-filled stickers.

The building is always a haven for these children, but last Saturday we brought art to them, and allowed them to tell us through imagery and art what is important to them, and by extension what is important to their community. Engaging with the neighborhood through conversation and art was literally illustrated and even the children who were old enough only to direct student volunteers armed with scissors, pencils, and smiles were able to tell us their favorite things in the world, with the knowledge that we cared and that these things would be turned into art.

Chairs and tables that felt slightly too small were constantly crowded and the voices of the children of the community were heard.
